Rondo Oyana Severino Beseku praised his Huracanes FC players for keeping their cool and fighting with their hearts to clinch maximum points in their first coming to the zonal finals of the 2023 CAF Women’s Champions League.
Forward Elena Obono Nkuadum Oyana spearheaded the sensational result, as he scored twice, while sending their fans Estadio Nacional de Malabo into total celebrations.
The game which saw Catalina Andema scored the other goals for Huracanes tally to complete the dramatic five-goal, reducing goals from Lagoali Kreto and Dikisha Esther to a consolatory was a good.
Severino was impressed that his side had not panicked in the tense clash, having to wait until the 77th minute to score the winner as Elena netted with a fierce first-time shot.
“It’s our first participation and this is a unique experience. We have young players still trying to discover this competition. The game really had intensity and was very physical. The pitch was heavy but was for the two teams. We had to adapt to the pitch conditions. My players were good today. They kept the instructions against a team with more experience and that played very direct,” Severino explained.
Before opening the scoring Andema had gone close in a nervous first half as Huracanes FC struggled to break down the defending champions.
But once Elena had opened the scoring Huracanes were visibly relaxed, especially after Andema added the second within three minutes.
Mazembe did have their moments late on, but Huracanes were given a let off when Sabinah Thom headed wide with the goal at his mercy.
“Their attitude is outstanding and very positive as well. We believe because of our athletic qualities to rapidly break on counters. That’s why we could fight and win even after the equalizer,” the experienced trainer added.
The win puts Huracanes in a strong position to qualify from the group ahead of holders Mazembe though there’s still all to play for in the remaining two games of the competition.
Mazembe will lock horns with Epah Ngamba on Monday while Huracanes close matters with Epah Ngamba on Thursday at the Estadio Nacional de Malabo.
