Former Indomitable Lions head coach Hugo Henry Broos has revealed he is targeting a second Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title with the Bafana Bafana of South Africa, seven years after winning his first with Cameroon.
Coach Broos made the revelation hours after his side’s shock 2-0 win against 10-man Morocco in an exciting eighth-final game on Tuesday in Korhogo.
The unbeaten Bafana Bafana side entered this edition of the AFCON as under dogs, but a win against Namibia and draws against Mali and Tunisia plus the victory against the Atlas Lions put them amongst the contenders – a status Broos has accepted while paying attention to his respect for Morocco.
“We beat Morocco. It’s something special. We had the right analysis on them. Our tactic was the right one. The first period, both teams were afraid. But then we scored first and we were lucky too. Now we go for the big one which is the trophy,” Broos said.
The Bafana Bafana arrived at Yamoussoukro this Thursday morning and immediately moved to their base at the Hotel President in the country’s political capital, Yamoussoukro.
Coach Broos will be hoping nobody wakes them up from the dream so far, so that they can go all the way and win the rainbow nation’s first AFCON title since Shaun Barllett, Mark Fish and co last did on home soil in 1996.
South Africa versus Cape Verde Island is one of the derbies that will characterize the intriguing quarter-final line-ups that also sees hosts Côte D’Ivoire confront fellow West Africans Mali at the Stade de la Paix in Bouake while Angola will test their know-how against three-time winners – Nigeria, DR Congo will face Guinea in the game.
