Cameroon’s handball campaign at the 2026 African Cup of Nations came to a painful end at the group stage, though it was marked by a proud response at the ongoing 27th edition of the competition in Kigali, Rwanda.
Defeated 24–18 by Guinea in the decisive phase, the Cameroonian team saw its ambitions of continental glory slip away. It was a difficult elimination to swallow, but it did not dampen the team’s determination.
Cameroon began the competition with a heavy 41–22 loss to Tunisia before bouncing back against Kenya with a 28–24 victory that restored confidence and reignited hopes of finishing the tournament on a positive note.
The title chase ultimately ended against Guinea. Cameroon’s long-standing ordeal of failing to progress beyond the group stage resurfaced as they bowed out once again.
However, Cameroon have qualified for the final of the President’s Cup at the 2026 Handball AFCON.
The Indomitable Lions’ return to form was confirmed in the semi-final against Congo, where they edged their opponents 28–27 to claim the top spot in Group B. They will face Gabon in the final on Friday, January 30.
Gabon, meanwhile, defeated hosts Rwanda 32–28 to top Group A of the President’s Cup. The winner of the final will be ranked ninth at the AFCON, while the loser will finish tenth. At the previous edition in Egypt, Cameroon placed tenth and will only improve on that record with victory over Gabon.
Beyond the results, this run reflects the resilience of Team Cameroon, determined to turn early disappointment into an opportunity.
The upcoming final against Gabon offers a chance to conclude the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations with a symbolic trophy—one significant mainly for morale, rebuilding, and consolation.
