Hakimi, Bounou and Ziyech in Morocco’s star-studded AFCON 2023 squad

Walid Regragui has named a strong squad of 24 players for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Côte D’Ivoire, including star midfielder Hakim Ziyech of Galatasaray, PSG’s reliable full-back Achraf Hakimi plus Saudi Arabia based 2022 FIFA World Cup hero reigning CAF goalkeeper of the year Yassine Bonou.

The squad announced on Thursday morning at a presser from home (Morocco) includes a blend of abroad based and home based players amongst which are El Mehdi Benabid of FAR Rabat and Yahya Attiat Allah of Wydad Casablanca.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup and number ranked nation on the continent is one of bookmakers favorites ahead of the tournament going by the quality at the disposal of the 2023 CAF trainer of the year.

Manchester United’s Sorfyan Amrabat and Marseille’s Azzeddine Ounahi form a part of the crop of talented midfielders retained for the finals.

The 2004 AFCON finalist are in group F as one of three previous winners. Former champions DR Congo and Zambia form part of the group completed by rising and returning Tanzania.

Morocco’s final 24-man squad for the tournament will be announced by CAF after the submission deadline on Wednesday, 03 January. Morocco’s provisional AFCON Squad:

Yassine Bonou (Al-Hilal), El mehdi Benabid (Far Rabat), M. Mohand (Al Wehda).All selections are provisional until the final list of 24 players is announced by CAF after the submission deadline on Wednesday, 03 January.

Achraf Hakimi (PSG), Noussair Mazraoui (Bayern Munich), Nayef Aguerd (West Ham), Ghanem Saiss (Al-Shabab), Yunis Abdelhamid (Reims), Yahya Attiat Allah (Wydad), Abdelkabir Abqar (Alaves), Chadi Riad (Real Betis), Mohamed Chibi (Pyramids).

Midfielders:
Sofyan Amrabat (Manchester United), I. Saibari (PSV), Azzeddine Ounahi (Marseille), Amine Harit (Galatasaray), Bilal El Khannouss (Genk), Selim Amallah (Valencia), Oussama El Azzouzi (Bolohna), A. Richardson (Reims).

Forwards:
Hakim Ziyech (Galatasaray), Ez Abde (Real Betis), Tarik Tissoudali (Gent), Ayoub El kaabi (Olympiacos), Youssef En-Nesyri (Sevilla), Amine Adli (Bayer Leverkusen), Sofiane Boufal (Al Rayyan).
