President Ali Bongo Ondimba has begun negotiations to secure the return of Pierre Emerick Aubameyang for the Panthers of Gabon. The Chelsea forward was pictured at the presidency in Libreville in a meeting this Monday, May 8 in the presence of the forward’s father Pierre-François Aubameyang, who also played for the national team.
Aubameyang retired from international football in January 2022 after dramatic events during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) which led to his exclusion from the squad in Cameroon.
Fast track, Monday May 8, Gabonese outlet La Republiqu is reporting that the player met the president in an event aimed at securing his return to the fold and the meeting was fruitful.
Though Gabon is faring well so far without the 33-year-old in the 2023 AFCON qualifier, the former Arsenal and Barcelona front man on board makes them a different team.
As it stands, Aubameyang has given his approval to be included in coach Patrice Neveu is expected to include the former AC Milan and Saint Etienne striker in his squad for obvious reasons.
The Chelsea striker already counts 30 goals in 72 appearances for the Panthers and could add to that if he returns and hits the ground running.
Gabon currently leads Group I with seven points from four games ahead of their double-header against DR Congo next month.
