- Ndoumbe Bosso won his third Cup of Cameroon trophy in his sixth finals
- Fovu are champions of the Cup of Cameroon for the third time
- Stephane Ikpeme D. scored his third goal of the competition in the final
Hansi Mbappe Muller scored on a debut while captain Stephane Ikpeme got the other goal from a brilliant free-kick to help Fovu beat 10-man PWD of Bamenda 2-0 and win the 2023 Cup of Cameroon this Sunday.
The rare final that featured teams from the ‘Grass field’ (Northwest and West Regions) was initially open and adventurous, given a magnificent backdrop on an overcast day at the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium by both sets of noisy fans making the most of a rare moment in the limelight.
Fovu’s first cup success in 13 years was launched when striker Mbappe fired home the opener after just ten minutes of the interesting final..
Midfielder Jeremy Kombi Ndedy played a low pass into the path of Muller who rounded goalkeeper 17-year-old Ning Che Bong Kadad, before putting the ball into an empty net.
PWD also went close with a Junior Tangko header from a corner, but despite taking the game to Fovu failed to score when they were on top.
They did, however, come close to having the ball in the net just before half-time when Ndiforchu Blaise received the ball on the edge of the box, but referee Bito Jeanot whistled for offside.
PWD returned with greater purpose in the second segment but couldn’t get the end product.
Brilliant Awahmukalla tested goalkeeper Junior Mbiandji on goal for Fovu, but the shot stopper gathered the weak effort.
Ikpeme doubled the advantage for Fovu in the 63rd minute through a well-taken free-kick that was misjudged by Ning Che.
Fovu nearly got the third just after, but the Abakwa Boys were fortunate as the shot bounced on the woodwork and returned into the waiting arms Ning Che.
PWD’s push to get at least a goal from the game was made worst when defender, Billy Samin was sent off.
Fovu managed the closing moments of the game to good effect, and sealed the result to land their third Cup of Cameroon title.
The 2001 and 2010 winners bag home the 2023 trophy from the hands of Cameroon’s head of Government Chief Joseph Dion Ngute. The win gives Fovu the right to represent Cameroon in the 2024/25 CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round.
Fovu’s road to glory:
Fovu 12-11 Colombe
Fovu 2-0 Victoria United
Fovu 7-6 Canon
Fovu 3-0 Astres
Fovu 6:3 Abong Mbang FC
Fovu 2-0 PWD of Bamenda
