The Lionesses of England have booked a semi final date with co-host nation Australia, after coming from behind to pick up a 2-1 win over Colombia this Saturday, August 12.
Despite the absence of Lauren James, one of England’s key players and highest scorer of the team during the group stage, the European champions have succeeded on eliminating every obstacle on their way to the title. They will face Australia without Lauren, due to a red-card suspension. She will only be available if England reaches the final.
Australia on the other hand, ousted France in what was seen as the longest penalty shootouts in the history of this competition, beating the latter 7-6 to pick up a semi final ticket.
They aim at making history by hosting and winning since this is their best result in Women’s World Cup history. They have participated in all but one edition(1991) of the competition
Of the six teams left in the competition, Sweden is the only nation who has reached this stage three times and unarguably the most determined side who eliminated defending champions, USA and one time champion Japan to reach this stage after finishing top of their group.
The 2003 finalists who have been bronze medalists three times, will be hoping to continue in this fierce spirit to emerge winner of the trophy this time around.
The battle for the final spot begins on Tuesday, between Spain and Sweden. While England takes on Australia on Wednesday.
