- The General Assembly of FECAFOOT has adopted a new statute extending the terms of its President and Executive Committee from two to three terms of four years each
- This change, ahead of the 2025 elections, aims to provide stability and continuity but has sparked concerns about accountability, especially given the current leadership’s unmet promises since 2021
- The football community remains divided on whether this extended tenure will benefit Cameroon football in the long run
The General Assembly of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) adopted a new statute on November 16 in Mbankomo, altering the terms of office for its leadership.
Previously, the President and other members of the Executive Committee were limited to two terms of four years each. The new statute extends this to three terms of four years each.
Before this change, the leadership of FECAFOOT was restricted to a maximum of eight years in office. This limitation was intended to ensure regular turnover and fresh perspectives within the federation’s executive ranks.
However, the recent decision marks a shift towards longer tenures, potentially allowing for more years in power
The next FECAFOOT elections are scheduled for 2025. This new statute could play a crucial role in these elections, as it allows the current leadership the opportunity to extend their influence and continue their projects for an additional term. This move is seen by some as a strategy to maintain the current administration’s momentum .
The football community has shown a range of reactions to this change. Supporters believe that extended terms will provide the necessary stability and continuity for FECAFOOT to achieve its long-term goals.
Critics, however, worry about the risks of entrenchment and reduced accountability, fearing that longer terms might lead to complacency or misuse of power.
Additionally there are concerns about the current regime, elected in 2021, which has not fully lived up to it’s promises . This leaves many wondering if an extended term is indeed the best option for Cameroon football.
