Faouzi Benzarti has been named the head coach of Tunisia’s national football team, marking his fourth tenure with the Eagles of Carthage.
The 74-year old was announced as Jalel Kadri’s replacement on Friday June 14 2024 by the Tunisian football Federation (FTF) and is set to fully resume duty on July 1.
Faouzi , born on January 3, 1950, is a Tunisian professional football manager with a storied career both as a player and a coach. As a player, he spent his entire career at his hometown club US Monastir, although he did not achieve notable success on the field. However, it was as a coach that Benzarti truly made his mark.
Benzarti began his coaching career at the young age of 29, quickly establishing himself as one of the youngest and most successful coaches in Tunisia. Throughout his illustrious career, he has amassed an impressive collection of 20 trophies. His accolades include prestigious continental honors such as one CAF Champions League title, two CAF Confederation Cup titles, and two CAF Super Cup titles.
He has managed some of the best teams on the continent, including Esperance, Club Africain, Etoile du Sahel, and CS Sfaxien, leading them to numerous domestic titles and solidifying his reputation as a top-tier coach. His extensive experience and success in African football have made him a respected figure in the sport.
Benzarti’s rich coaching resume includes guiding the team to the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations and securing league titles with prominent clubs such as ES Tunis and Wydad Casablanca.
His appointment comes as a strategic move by the Tunisian Football Federation, banking on his extensive experience and past successes to propel the national team to new heights.
Before his appointment Montassar Louhichi and Anis Boussaidi had been serving as caretaker coaches. The formidable duo led the 2004 African champions through an undefeated streak in their recent outings, showcasing a robust defense with back-to-back 0-0 draws against Croatia and New Zealand during the FIFA Series friendlies in March 2024.
They continued their winning ways by securing a narrow 1-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea in Tunis, sustaining their flawless performance in Group H of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on June 5.
However, Tunisia’s impeccable qualifying run met a slight hiccup with a goalless draw against Namibia in Johannesburg on June 9. Despite this minor setback, they still hold a two-point lead over the Brave Warriors, maintaining their position at the summit of the group standings.
With the AFCON qualifiers set for September and Tunisia to know it’s contenders for the qualifiers by July 4, the former US Monastir player will need to build a formidable team to take on the challenge.
