Cameroon international goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa will play second-division football next season after his club FK Rabotnički were relegated from the Macedonian First Football League following another defeat in the championship.
Rabotnički’s fate was confirmed after a 3–1 loss to city rivals Makedonija Gjorče Petrov on matchday 21 of the league season. The defeat leaves the Skopje-based side 11th out of 12 teams with only one match remaining, making it mathematically impossible for them to escape the drop zone.
The club has endured a difficult campaign throughout the season, collecting just 13 points from 21 matches. Their record of three wins, four draws and 14 defeats highlights the scale of their struggles in the Macedonian top flight this year.
Ondoa, who joined Rabotnički during the campaign, has been involved in the team’s final run of matches as they attempted to fight against relegation. However, the closing stretch has been particularly tough for the Cameroonian shot-stopper, who has conceded 16 goals in five appearances as the team’s defensive problems continued to mount.
The 2017 Africa Cup of Nations winner, who played a key role in Cameroon’s triumph in Gabon, arrived with the hope of stabilizing Rabotnički’s defence. But the club’s overall difficulties proved too great to overcome, with results failing to improve during the decisive phase of the season.
With one matchday left before the campaign concludes, Rabotnički will now simply be playing for pride as they prepare for life in the Macedonian second division next season.
For Ondoa, the relegation represents another challenging chapter in his club career, and the coming months could determine whether he remains with Rabotnički for their promotion push or looks elsewhere to continue playing top-flight football.
