Exclusive: Cotonsport Ladies to go operational from next season

Officials of Cotonsport of Garoua are putting resources together to set in motion a women’s football team from the 2024/25 season, kick442.com has gathered.

We understand board members of the club have approved the women’s football club project and given operational management the powers to begin formalities to set the project in motion.

Though the move concide with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) the request that participating clubs in it’s interclub competitions must have a women’s football team, sources at the North Region football powerhouse say the project had been in the making even before the recommendation was made.

Coton Filles FC would be a new member of the Cameroon Women’s Football family in the days ahead – a move which will certainly change the dynamics of the Women’s game in the country.

Cotonsport of Garoua have dominated Cameroon football in the past three decades of their existence, winning 18 domestic league titles in 27 seasons in the top-flight and only finishing outside the top four twice.

In the meantime, Cotonsport have agreed a partnership with an undisclosed Guinness Super League club to be their official affiliate women’s team for the coming season. This move will help the club meet the CAF requirements for clubs in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup.

The birth of Cotonsport Filles could shift the balance of power of Women’s Football from the center and Littoral Regions of Cameroon to North Region as it did in the men’s game in 1986.
