  • Andre Onana only featured in one match during the 34th edition of the AFCON in Côte D’Ivoire
  • El Hadji Diouf says the Manchester United FC shot stopper was poorly managed at the tournament
  • Onana has had curtailed involved at the past two major competitions he has attended as a member of the Cameroon team

Senegalese football legend El Hadji Diouf says Cameroon treated Andre Onana Onana poorly in their running to the eighth final elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte D’Ivoire.

The two-time African footballer of the year who followed the tournament from close range – sharing the same hotel with the Cameroon team as a part of Senegal’s official delegation questionned the grounds on which coach Rigobert Song had the Manchester United FC goalkeeper at his disposal during crucial matches but opted not to play him during a blunt submission on A3.

“André Onana is someone I respect a lot and I congratulate for what he does and the love he has for his team.

“Today, how can you have an Onana, a very great goalkeeper who plays for Manchester United and you don’t play him in the match in the round of 16?,” Diouf questioned before concluding; “To me, it’s a lack of respect and if I was a player, I wasn’t going to agree with that.”

Onana arrived on the eve of Cameroon’s first AFCON game against Guinea. He watched the 1-1 draw from the stands then featured in the 1-3 defeat against Senegal before being dropped in the 3-2 win against The Gambia and the 0-2 defeat against eventual runners-up Nigeria in the classic 16th final fixture.

In all, Onana only made one appearance in his third AFCON tournament – a below par situation for the 28-year-old who also featured just once at 2022 FIFA World Cup before being sent home due to what the Cameroon football federation (FECAFOOT) qualified as indiscipline.

Song has since lost his job as part of the consequences of events of Cameroon’s display at the 34th edition of the AFCON but more consequences are expected, maybe as a prove that the team as well as Onana was poorly managed as Diouf believes.
