  • Cameroon could return to the U-20 AFCON for the first time since the 2021 edition in Mauritania
  • The U-20 Lions are likely to replace Congo whom have been suspended from all FIFA related activities
  • CAF is yet to communicate about the situation but Congo will not be in the draw

The U-20 Indomitable Lions of Cameroon could join DR Congo as one of the two Union of Central African Football Federation (UNIFFAC) nations at the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) scheduled for later this year in Cote d’Ivoire.

According to information reaching the kick442.com editorial team, Congo which qualified for the tournament could now be replaced by Cameroon due to the suspension of the country’s football federation by the world football governing body, FIFA.

As it stands, Congo can’t participate in any CAF or FIFA event. Therefore Cameroon that finished third in the zonal qualifiers after losing the semi-final on post-match penalties to DR Congo will be the second best team in the tournament and thus secure a place in the finals.

The life wire handed to Cameroon will breed fresh life into the team that was still digesting it’s absence in back-to-back editions of the U-20 AFCON.

The draw for the tournament is expected to take place this month and if Cameroon is roped in, they will join Egypt and Zambia in Pot 2 while Ghana, DR Congo, Morocco, Sierra Leone, Kenya, South Africa and Tanzania are all in Pot 3 and Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire and defending champions Senegal are top seeded.

AFCON Cote d’Ivoire 2025 will take place from April 26-May 18 as the teams vie for a spot at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile that gets under way in September.

Africa will have four teams at those finals, providing the 12 qualified teams with a giant carrot ahead of the pool stage draw that is scheduled for later this month.
