Clement Massamba, the head coach of the Congo Republic national team says his team is in Kinshasa to learn from the 2023 Union of Football Federation of Central Africa (UNIFFAC) U20 tournament.
Speaking in the press conference room ahead of their first game against Central Africa Republic coach Massamba said current champions have a clear objective in the competition.
“We came to prepare our team for the Francophonie tournament that will be played here.
“We started our preparations from Brazaville. We felt like it was a good time for us to test with our neighbors. It is from this that we are going to know our level.”
Though the trainer stayed humble throughout the entire presser, the media couldn’t get the favorites tag off the side that conquered the region last December.
Congo’s recent exploits makes them strong contender in the tournament but the coach is not obsessed about winning.
“To lift the trophy is a dream of all the teams. However, we are not favorites. We are here to learn. This, however, wouldn’t stop us from being competitive,” Massamba added.
Defender, Diambomba Davarel who followed his trainer to the press also expressed maximum humility.
“We came here to fly our flag high. A team’s performance depends on the trainer. So, we will align to what the gaffer says, but in the course of the competition, objectives could change.
“We know CAR as well as they know us. We played twice in the space of 4 months, and both teams left with lessons. Let’s see what tomorrow holds,” the 19-year-old ended.
Congo confronts Central Africa Republic in the second game of the tournament this Saturday afternoon at the Stade de Martyrs. Before then, host DR Congo are up against Gabon.
