Cissé Unveils First Libya Squad as New Era Begins

In a swift move, newly appointed Libya head coach Aliou Cissé has announced his first squad, just 24 hours after taking the reins. The Senegalese coach, who led his home nation to a TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations title in 2022, has opted for a locally dominated squad as Libya prepares for crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Angola and Cameroon.

The squad’s composition has raised eyebrows, with the notable absence of Moatasem Al-Musrati, the AS Monaco midfielder who declined the call-up, and defender Daniel Elfadli. Despite these omissions, Cissé has assembled a strong squad featuring key figures from Libya’s domestic league, blending experienced internationals with fresh faces.

Libya currently sits second in Group D with four points from two matches, trailing Cameroon by just one point. With a home fixture against Angola on March 20 in Benghazi, followed by a trip to Yaoundé to face Cameroon on March 25, Cissé’s men have a golden opportunity to position themselves as serious contenders for a historic World Cup qualification.

Cissé’s tactical discipline and ability to instill a winning mentality will be crucial in solidifying the team’s defense and improving its attacking efficiency. The squad’s midfield will be led by experienced players Faisal Al-Badri, Badr Hassan, and Abdullah Daqo, while the strike force will rely on Moayad Al-Lafi and Mohamed Soula to deliver goals.

As Cissé adapts to the Libyan football environment, his ability to implement his tactical approach quickly will be key to the Knights of the Mediterranean’s success in these qualifiers.
