Ousmanou Christophe Bonaventure has stepped down from his role as head coach Fovu of Baham barely two weeks after his appointment, and less than a week before their first-leg CAF Confederation Cup game against Paynesville FC of Liberia.
The Baham outfit is preparing to face Orange Cup winners Paynesville FC of Liberia in the Confederation Cup this weekend in Yaoundé.
Relegated to Cameroon’s top tier, with many of its Cup of Cameroon-winning players off the team, Coach Ousmanou efforts to assemble a squad proved to be futile.
The former Cotonsport assistant coach and eventual head coach of Cotonsport of Garoua back in 2021 when they reached the semi-finals of the Confederation Cup ran out of patience as players constantly refused training citing poor working conditions.
The former U-20 Lions coach that won the 2020 UNIFFAC U20 tournament in Equatorial Guinea informed Fovu’s management of his move and has returned to Garoua.
Fovu has to get a new trainer before travelling to Liberia to face Paynesville FC or try to fix things with coach Christophe.
In the past, more experienced Fovu made one appearance in the CAF Champions League (in 2001, reaching the First Round) and one appearance in the CAF Confederation Cup (in 2011 during the Preliminary Round). They also participated in the CAF Winner’s Cup in 2002, reaching the Second Round.
The team boasts a championship title from 2002, three Cup of Cameroon trophies (in 2001, 2010, and 2023), and two Cameroon Super Cup victories (in 2000 and 2001). Additionally, they were finalists in the UNIFFAC Cup in 2006.
Paynesville FC, although new to CAF competitions, boasts a roster filled with seasoned players who have competed in the Champions League, Confederation Cup, and represented the national team.
Coach Dominic Savice, who has successfully guided the team from the third division to the first division within three years, faces the challenge of delivering results, especially given the significant investments made in the club.
The first-leg of the encounter is scheduled to take place in Paynesville, Liberia, at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium, with the return-leg set for Cameroon between August 25 at the Amadou Ahidjo Stadium.
The winner of this match will advance to face Stade Malien of Mali in the 2nd Preliminary Round.
