Bayern Munich could only get a point on Friday night in Leipzig as Choupo Moting’s first half strike was cancelled by a goal from Marcel Halstenberg on the night of the first German Bundesliga action in 2023.
The Cameroon international found the back of the Leipzig net midway into the first half when Ivorian descent forward Serge Gnabry picked him with an inch-perfect pass around the penalty area.
Choupo’s 37th minute strike gave Bayern a deserving lead after they had pressed Leipzig in their half for over half an hour.
Bayern missed a number of chances to extend their lead before the interval, but a combination of poor finishing and good defense cost the glaring chances.
Marcel Halstenberg restored parity seven minutes after resumption courtesy an assist from Dominik Szoboszlai.
Clear-cut chances were at a premium in the closing 30 minutes as both sides settled for a point. Werner shot over from inside the box with the best of them, with the gap between third and first staying at six points after 16 rounds of fixtures.
Choupo has scored ten goals and made two assists in 15 games for Bayern Munich this season.
