Cameroon have released a 30-man provisional squad for their preparations camp ahead of the 2023 African Nations championship, CHAN 2022 scheduled for next month in Algeria.
The list published this Saturday, December 10, 2022 is dominated by players of defending champions, Cotonsport of Garoua notably captain Marou Souaibou who is fresh from the FIFA World Cup alongside Jerome Ngom Mbeleki of Colombe of Dja.
The Cotonsport contingent also have star defender Che Malone Fondoh Junior who constitute a group of nine players from the club.
Coton’s Felix Oukine and Valentine Beo Batto of Colombe of Dja are the only survivors from the last edition of the tournament held in Cameroon in January 2021, but Etta Bawak Thomas of PWD of Bamenda who was deputy skipper in the 2018 CHAN competition in Morocco returns to the fold.
The full squad includes four keepers, nine defenders, ten midfielders and seven forwards among which is 2021 Elite One championship top scorer Kemajou Junior of Bamboutos FC.
Saidou has kept seven players on the waiting list in anticipation of the need for a late change.
Alioum Saidou’s intermediate lions overturned a one goal deficit to sail through at the detriment of Equatorial Guinea, thanks to goals from Cotonsport’s duo Kaiba Djawal and Marou Souaibou.
The Cameroon squad is comprised of players from the top-flight championship only, based on the performances of players during this season’s championship.
Cameroon who were host CHAN 2021 and finished fourth are in group E of the upcoming tournament. They are alongside Niger who will be in their fourth participation and fellow central zone side, Congo, who will also be featuring for the fourth time.
Cameroon will be in the fifth participation in the competition, hoping to do better. The intermediate lions missed the 2009 and 2014 editions of the competition, but reached the quarter finals in 2011 and 2016 but the present squad is expected to do more.
CHAN 2022 will run from Friday,
Jan 13, 2023 to Saturday February 4, 2023 in five Venues across four host cities.
