- Che Malone and Leonel Ateba’s Simba SC, is off to the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals
- They overturned a 2-0 first-leg loss to defeat Al Masry in a penalty shootout
- Their next challenge is against Stellenbosch FC
Cameroonian talents Che Malone and Leonel Ateba have helped Simba SC secure a historic qualification for the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup following their dramatic penalty shootout victory over Al Masry.
The Tanzanian club overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit to advance in front of a raucous home crowd at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.
In the first leg, Simba SC suffered a 2-0 defeat in Suez, Egypt, with Al Masry’s Abderrahim Deghmoum and John Ebuka scoring in the first half. This result left the Tanzanian giants with an uphill task in the return leg.
The second leg on April 9, 2025, saw Simba SC come out aggressively, buoyed by their home fans. Elie Mpanzu scored the opening goal in the 22nd minute with a thunderous strike, giving Simba hope. Ten minutes later, Steven Mukwala doubled their lead with a composed finish, leveling the aggregate score at 2-2.
Despite dominating possession and creating several chances, Simba could not find a third goal during regular or extra time. The game proceeded to penalties, where goalkeeper Camara emerged as the hero, saving two spot-kicks to secure a 4-1 victory in the shootout
Leonel Ateba has been a key figure in Simba’s attacking setup throughout the tournament.The former dynamo of douala forward has three goals , one assist in this competition. His physical presence and ability to link up play have been vital in breaking down opposition defenses.
Although he did not score in this match, his contributions were instrumental in earlier rounds as Simba topped their group to reach the quarterfinals
Che Malone, on the other hand, has faced challenges due to injury. Reports indicate that he has been sidelined for recent matches. However, his defensive leadership earlier in the competition helped solidify Simba’s backline, ensuring they reached this stage.
Simba SC will now face Stellenbosch FC in the semi-finals aftter the side saw off Zamalek 1-0.
