DR Congo booked their place in the final of the African World Cup play-offs with a 1–0 victory over Cameroon in Rabat, thanks to a stoppage-time winner from captain Chancel Mbemba. The win sets up a showdown with Nigeria, with the inter-continental play-off on the line.
The match, coached by Sebastian Desabre for DR Congo and Marc Brys for Cameroon, was tense and largely cagey. Both sides struggled to create clear-cut chances for long periods. Cameroon were hampered by injuries and absences, including Yoane Wissa, who did not feature. Karl Etta Eyong had several opportunities but failed to convert, leaving the Indomitable Lions frustrated.
Vincent Aboubakar entered at half-time to provide fresh impetus in attack. His presence improved Cameroon’s build-up play and created more pressure on the DR Congo defence, but the finishing touch was missing.
DR Congo gradually gained control in the second half, with Silas Katompa and Meschack Elia probing Cameroon’s back line. André Onana made key saves to keep the score level as the game edged toward full time.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 92nd minute. A poorly cleared corner allowed Mbemba to react fastest in the box and fire a precise shot into the net, securing a dramatic victory for the Congolese side.
Cameroon pushed in the final minutes but could not find an equaliser, ending their World Cup campaign. DR Congo, under Desabre’s guidance, will now face Nigeria in the African play-off final, with a chance to advance to the inter-continental play-off.
