Co-host Tanzania kicked off their 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign in style, defeating Burkina Faso 2-0.

Backed by the home crowd, the East Africans put up a dominant display at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in the tournament’s opening game graced by CAF president Dr Patrice Motsepe.

The Taifa Stars opened the scoring through Abdul Hamis Suleiman “Sopu” in added minutes of the first stanza after Mzize was brought down in the penalty box.

Burkina Faso tactician Issa Balboné made numerous changes on return from the break but his decision proved in effective as the home team continued to pile pressure on the West Africans.

Player of the match Feisal Abdallah and Young African Forward Clement Mzize came close to extending the lead only to be denied by the custodian Sanou who was brilliant on the day.

Tanzania sealed the emphatic victory in the 71st minute, former Simba captain and defender Mohamed Hussein earning his name on the scoresheet following a VAR review.

With Maximum points, Tanzania now go top of group B that also accommodates Madagascar, Central African Republic and Mauritania at the prestigious continental showpiece.
