Bayern Munich have suffered a major blow with the news that star striker Eric Maxim Choupo Moting will miss Tuesday’s first-leg UEFA Champions League quarter-final game against Manchester City through a knee problem.
The Cameroon international, who has scored four goals in six matches in the competition recently recovered from a back pain that kept him out for almost a month, but now has fresh issues.
“Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting will not travel to Manchester. The forward is unavailable due to a knee problem.” the Bundesliga club announced.
Choupo missed Bayern’s 1-0 league victory over Freiburg last Saturday and has been unavailable since April 4, when he last played 64’ in a 2-1 loss against the latter.
Choupo,34, had reported that he felt a sharp pain on his right knee and tests showed he can’t be available for the game.
It means that the gifted hit-man will definitely miss Tuesday’s quarter-final clash at the Etihad Stadium.
The former PSG man is expected to be sidelined for some time which makes him doubtful for the return game next week.
This development is a major blow to Bayern’s hopes of securing another UEFA Champions League title.
His absence will come as a major fillip to Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola as his side look to better Bayern and reach the semi-final of the competition for the third fourth time in his tenure in Manchester.
In his third season at Bayern Munich, the former Paris Saint-Germain forward is the club’s highest goal scorer so far this season with 17 goals in all competitions.
Bayern going into this clash against Pep Guardiola’s City without their top goalscorer is a huge setback for new head coach Thomas Tuchel who will have to field either Sadio Mane or Serge Gnabry as a replacement for Choupo.
The Indomitable Lion’s vice captain has been very instrumental for Bayern this season since he become a regular starter ahead of Sadio Mane who was out for a while due to an injury.
Bayern will also have to do without injured Manuel Neuer who hasn’t featured for months now.
