The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia Football Club (CBE FC) retained the Ethiopian women’s Premier League after a 6-1 win over Diredawa in Matchday 25 of the league.
With a game to spare, the consecutive league winners secured the title on Wednesday.
The victory qualified CBE FC for fourth straight CECAFA (East Africa) Women’s Champions League Qualifiers on home soil in Addis Ababa.
Since 2021 when the CAF Women’s Champions League started, CBE FC have been a dominant force in the Ethiopian league and qualifying for the Zonal tournaments but is yet to make it to the CAF Women’s Champions League.
In 2021, the team reached the Zonal finals but faltered to Kenya side, Vihiga Queens 2-1.
The Club finished third after losing 2-1 to Ugandan team, She Corporate FC in the semi-final and defeated AS Kigali (Rwanda) 3-1 in the third place match in 2022.
Last year (2023), CBE FC reached another Zonal final and succumbed to a 5-4 loss on penalties to JKT Queens (Tanzania) on penalties after goalless draw in regulation time.
That was the team’s closest chance of making it to the CAF Women’s Champions League.
They hope to win the Zonal title this year to qualify for their maiden CAF Women’s Champions League.
