This thursday the 27th of February 2025, President Faustin-Archange Touadera of the Central African Republic(CAR) welcomed the country’s U-17 national team to the Renaissance Palace in Bangui.
Coach Cyr Dertin Boulen Gue team, was honored for their remarkable achievement in qualifying for the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.
The squad that finished runners-up to Cameroon after coming from a 9-0 deficit in their first game to beat Congo and Gabon to qualify for the African Cup of Nations was received by the president, who praised the players’ mental strength and determination throughout the competition.
President Faustin-Archange Touadera did not hold back his words of congratulations to the players, appreciating their character and resilience.
Coach Cyr Dertin Boulen Gue’s staff and players were welcomed by the state protocol and then ushered into the presidency, where they spent time with the president. Each player received a handshake from the president, who promised to support them in their upcoming assignment. The CAR squad qualified for the African Cup of Nations and was placed in Group D, alongside Côte d’Ivoire, Angola, and Mali.
The young Fauves will be heading to their first-ever U-17 African Cup of Nations, which kicks off next month in Morocco from the 30th of match to the 19th of April 2025, which will feature 16 other African nations.This historic achievement marks a significant milestone for the team and the nation.
Moreover,the top eight quarter-finalists will automatically qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025, while the third-placed teams from the four groups will compete in playoffs for the remaining two spots.
However, CAR players left the presidency in total delight, conscious of what awaits them in the nearest future. They will continue their preparation for the under-17 African Cup of Nations, while recognising that they will face champions like Burkina Faso and Somalia.
The Central African Republic national team, has undergone a significant transformation in recent years. Despite being traditionally one of the weakest teams in Africa and the world, they have achieved notable successes, including winning the 2009 CEMAC Cup by defeating Equatorial Guinea 3-0 in the final.
The team’s history dates back to 1956, when they made their debut under the name of Ubangi-Shari against French Cameroon. Over the years, the team has participated in various tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
With their recent successes and the support of their president and the nation, the Central African Republic U-17 team is expected to make a strong showing in the tournament.
