- Cameroon has dropped by two places in the latest Ranking following despite being a period of inactivity
- The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon have been faced with forward and backwards movements in the rankings in the past few years
The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon have dropped by two places in the latest FIFA rankings published this Thursday. The FIFA performance index reflecting the nation’s performances from the time of the last publication show Cameroon has lost the two places gained from the last publication.
This Thursday’s release has seen the five-time African champions dropped from the 49th position of last time out to position 51st now despite not kicking a ball from the last time.
Our panel of analysts believe the drop in position of Cameroon and other non-European and South American nations have been greatly influenced by movements in the rankings experienced by nations that participated in the just concluded Copa America for the South Americans and Europeans’ Euro 2024.
Cameroon that gained two places after beating Cape Verde Islands and picking a point from a draw in Angola last June is expected to be back in action in September in the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) via which they could make claims for a better position and respect on the continent and beyond.
Tracing back through the annals of FIFA rankings, Cameroon’s journey has been marked by significant fluctuations.
The team’s zenith was achieved on December 16, 2009, when they soared to the 11th position, a milestone that underscored their dominance in African football.
Conversely, the nadir came on March 14, 2013, as they dipped to the 79th spot, prompting a period of introspection and rebuilding.
Over the past decade, the Lions have clawed back , showcasing a gradual ascent from the 50th position in December 2020 to their current standing.
This climb is indicative of the strategic reforms and the infusion of new talent, which have revitalized the team’s international outlook.
Marc Brys and his team of both local and internationals, heralds a new chapter for Cameroon’s football ambitions.
The next rankings will be published in September this year.
