  • Nsame was an unused substitute in all three group games of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar
  • The Young Boys Bern forward hasn’t had the chance to replicate his club form for country
  • The striker has opted out after turning up at a number of camps and ending up as a spectator at most

Young Boys Bern striker, Jean Pierre Nsame has revealed frustration forced him out of the national team after years of waiting for his chance to no avail.

Nsame picked Cameroon over France in 2016 and only won one cap in six years.

The big forward made his first and only outing for the Indomitable Lions in the 1-1 draw in a FIFA World Cup qualifier match against the Super Eagles of Nigeria in September 2017

The 28-year-old has now revealed to l’Equipe that frustration forced him away after a discussion with coach Rigobert Song.

“I asked myself the question, whether it is worth continuing with the team, of waiting for the opportunity to play, or showing that I can contribute something.

“Two or three months after the World Cup, I decided to call Rigobert Song and I told him that I was thinking about distancing myself from the national team,” Nsame revealed.

The striker then went on to explain the reason behind his decision.

“I told him that I am disappointed and frustrated, which is why I want to take a step back, because I am not sure I can and want to continue…

“I had difficulty finding my place in the team. Maybe because I grew up in Europe,” he added.

Nsame only enjoyed the trust of Hugo Broos on arrival, but the likes of Clarence Seedorf, Antonio Conceicao and even Song who is presently in charge of the national team have all failed to give him the needed minutes to prove his worth.

The striker’s decision to quit international football gives him the opportunity to focus on his club career with Young Boys Bern.
