The U-17 Women’s national football team of Cameroon will become the first team to play an official match at the Olembe Stadium since Senegal beat Egypt on penalties to lift the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in February 2022.
This development was confirmed this week after CAF wrote to concerned parties to inform them of their approval of the choice of the giangantual edifice for their clash against their Ethiopian counterparts.
Cameroon that eliminated Egypt by 5-0 aggregate in the previous round of the qualifiers, welcomed Ethiopia on March 8 before travelling to Addis Abeba for the second-leg clash days later.
Coach Joseph Brian Ndoko’s team will be hoping to bring back joy from the venue for Cameroon’s who watched their senior national men’s team lost on post-match penalties to Egypt the last time any Cameroon team played at the venue.
Meetings between Ethiopia and Cameroon in women’s football have been close over the years and this will provide a new episode for both nations to showcase the next generation of talents they are grooming.
The ten nations from the continent that qualify for the finals will be in Morocco for the enlarged tournament later this year and Cameroon is hoping to add to her few participation in the world cup via this generation.
