The U18 Lionesses of Cameroon capped off their historic maiden U18 Women’s AfroBasket campaign with a bronze medal, edging out Uganda 70-66 in a nail-biting third-place matchup on Saturday, September 14.

Despite facing a daunting semi-final clash against eventual champions Mali, the Cameroonian squad showcased their mettle and talent throughout the tournament. Emedie Damaris emerged as a force to be reckoned with, recording a double-double of 19 points and 24 rebounds in just 33 minutes of action.

The game tipped off with Cameroon asserting their dominance, as Keyla Kipo and Marwina Williams connected on back-to-back buckets to build an early cushion. Uganda responded with a run of their own, narrowing the deficit before briefly taking the lead. Damaris stepped up big for Cameroon, draining a clutch jumper just before the first-quarter buzzer to give her team a 15-13 advantage.

In the second period, Damaris continued to make her presence felt, converting a pair of layups to keep Cameroon in the driver’s seat. Both squads traded blows, but Cameroon managed to maintain a slim 21-20 lead heading into halftime.

The third quarter saw Uganda’s Anyango heating up, but Cameroon refused to back down, orchestrating a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 55-47 entering the final frame.

Although Uganda outscored Cameroon 19-15 in the fourth quarter, their late surge fell short, as Cameroon held on for the bronze medal, a historic achievement that will undoubtedly inspire the next generation of Cameroonian basketball stars.
