Two international rugby sevens tournaments will take place on Saturday, November 30, in Garoua and Bafoussam, organized by the Groupe Essono Rugby.

The Sahel Seven will occur at the Cenajas Stadium in Garoua, starting at 8 AM. This tournament features 16 teams—12 men’s and 4 women’s—from various rugby clubs in Cameroon and Central Africa. Organizers aim for the Cameroonian team to gain experience from their Central African counterparts while promoting rugby regionally, which is why entry is free. Such initiatives have been warmly welcomed, as they not only raise awareness about the sport but also provide local teams with valuable experience.

Similarly, the Grassfield Seven tournament is set for the same day at Bamendzi Stadium in Bafoussam. This event includes the Central African Republic’s rugby team, Danzi Rugby Club from Bangui, which has been in Cameroon since November 21 and began qualifying rounds on November 28.

Alain Ntsimi, President of Groupe Essono Rugby, emphasizes that inviting regional teams helps expand the sport. “The Groupe Essono is a private sports association. We invited Danzi Rugby Club to extend rugby activities in the sub-region. We aspire to be an international organization, promoting rugby as a global value for youth,” he stated.

Rugby remains underrepresented in Cameroon, with the national team facing challenges in international competitions like the Rugby Sevens tournaments. However, these tournaments represent a significant step forward in fostering interest and participation in the sport.
