Cameroon: Aurelien Chedjou questions recent adjustments in the Indomitable Lions den

Former Indomitable Lions of Cameroon defender Aurelien Chedjou Fongang, has questioned the decision to provide greater powers to the national technical directoriate (DTN), only when there’s dwindling performances from the Rigobert Song-led staff.

Engelbert Mbarga who replaced Serge Noah revealed at the DTN revealed after last week’s crisis meeting that they had resolved that his service will get more involved in management of the national team.

Many are those who have questioned FECAFOOT’s decision to add the responsibility of the DTN instead of taking out the staff that hasn’t delivered as it was with Song’s predecessor.

Now, former Lille sweeper Chedjou has joined the agitating party as he raised the key questions this Tuesday during a radio show on popular Douala-based Radio, RSI.

“Why do we think of the DTN only when things have become messy? Why didn’t we speak about them when we appointed Song?,” the former Galatasaray defender asked.

“We are doing everything in a haphazard manner,” Chedjou added as he described the management of Cameroon football these days.

The Eto’o-led executives are battling with the huge backlash created by the poor results lately. A section of the Cameroon public shares the same thoughts as Chedjou.

Song replaced Antonio Conceicao Da Silva Oliveira in February 2022 on the eve of the 2022 FIFA World Cup playoff double-header against Algeria.

The emblematic figure in his days as a player stirred the Indomitable Lions to a record eighth FIFA World Cup qualification, but the team has struggled since then.

Song has had a below expectation return of four wins in 12 games. This has increased the number of Cameroonians losing trust in his potentials and powers to achieve progress with the team.

The draw and defeat to Namibia in match day three and four of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers late last month hasn’t helped matters.

The decision to bring back Chedjou’s defensive partner at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Nicolas Nkoulou, at the expense of younger defenders hasn’t helped Song’s popularity.

Chedjou sees the presence of the 34-year-old as a positive, while revealing how his former mate can help the current generation of players.

“We don’t have to be hard on Nkoulou. A defense starts from the forwards. How do we defend in the forward areas? Nkoulou has experience which we need to explore.”

Song’s Cameroon team is currently second to Namibia in Group C of the 2023 AFCON qualifier.

The Indomitable Lions need to avoid defeat against Burundi at home in September to secure qualification for the 34th edition of the AFCON in Cote D’Ivoire.

Frank Happy, FECAFOOT’s director of football development has insisted Song be assessed in January 2024, per the performance of Cameroon at the AFCON as he has a contract mandating him to return home with a sixth continental title.
