Tabe Brenda Ebika believes Coach Jean Baptiste Bisseck’s Cameroon side shouldn’t consider Kenya as underdogs as there are no small teams in Africa these days.
The Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon are preparing to face Kenya in the first qualifier round of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AWCON) on Friday, at the Reunification stadium in Douala.
Cameroon may be seen as one of the teams expected to qualify for next year’s AWCON in Morocco, but they must take Kenya seriously, Tabe said as she highlighted the incredible form of the lower-ranked teams in Africa these days.
The Lionesses have participated in all-but-one AWCON tournaments since its inception, while their opponents, Kenya can only boast of one appearance in the finals, coincidentally in Cameroon in 2016.
Despite Kenya’s limited AWCON qualification experience, Cameroon is not treating them as a lesser opponent, kick442.com gathered from Tabe’s telling submission via AllezLesLions during Tuesday’s training session.
“It’s a very important game for us. There are no small teams in the African continent these days,” Tabe insisted.
The meeting against Kenya is a remake of Cameroon’s journey to the 2006 tournament. Back then, the Indomitable Lionesses won at home and away on a 9-0 aggregate score.
Those days seem to be behind both nations as Kenya has improved massively since then.
The Lionesses moved to Douala last weekend and have been fine-tuning strategies to be ready for Friday.
18yo Tabe is part of the upcoming generation in the team, having moved from the U-17, U-20 to the senior team within three years. The former Awa Filles scorer is loving it, going by her words.
“It is not the first time I am part of the team in camp. But it is going to be the first time I play qualifier matches. The preparation is mental, tactical and physical. We are promising victory,” Tabe added.
The Lionesses will host the Harambee Starlets on Friday evening at the Reunification stadium in Douala, before traveling to Nairobi for the return action that is slated for September 26 at the Nyaro national stadium.
Whichever nation overcomes the hurdle will then face the winner between Gabon and Botswana in the second round.
The winner of the second round of action, slated between November 27 and December 5, will then secure a ticket to the AWCON finals to be held in Morocco in 2024.
