Ivorian women’s league champions, Atletico FC is hoping to become the second host team to clinch the CAF Women’s Champions League title.

ASFAR FC of Morocco claimed the title last year at home, defeating maiden winners, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies of South Africa in the final.

The Abidjan-based side is making their first-ever appearance in the three-year-old tournament.

In the same group with the host are two debutants, Sporting Club Casablanca (Morocco) and JKT Queens (Tanzania).

They will also face 2021 winners, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies in Group A with the title in sight.

“Now that the draw has been conducted, the way we train has changed and we are putting more effort,” Athletico FC captain, Joy Sunday posited after the draw in Abidjan.

“We have every chance of getting out of the group because we believe in ourselves and the team. It is our first time there will be a lot of pressure from our fans and sport lovers but we will overcome it and the target is to win the CAF Women’s Champions League.” She concluded.

As host, Athletico FC automatically qualified for the competition.

They finished third at the West Africa Zone B (WAFU-B) Women’s Champions League Qualifiers in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria.

The team won two of their four games against Amis du Monde (2-0) and the third place match over Sam Nelly of Benin Republic (3-0) after losing 3-1 to winners, Ampem Darkoa (Ghana) and the semi-final 3-2 to Delta Queens (Nigeria).

The focus for the capital team is to surpass their feat at the WAFU-B tournament and win the title as a debutant.
