  • USM Algiers and RS Berkane’s highly anticipated second-leg match in the CAF Confederation Cup semi-final has faced another setback, as it was boycotted for the second time.
  • The Algerian side refused to show up for the game despite being present in the stadium
  • This incident may just see RS Berkane qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup final, as CAF had awarded three points to them by forfeiture in the first leg

The eagerly awaited second-leg meeting of the CAF Confederation Cup semi-final between RS Berkane and Algeria’s USM Algiers has been called off for the second time.

The clash, originally scheduled for this Sunday, April 28, at the Berkane Municipal Stadium, took an unexpected twist when the visiting Algerian team failed to emerge from their dressing room, while host RS Berkane warmed up on the pitch and were ready to play. Instead, they quietly retreated to their hotel after the pre-match formalities.

This recent situation echoes the earlier disruption in the first leg in Algeria, where the match failed to proceed due to Algerian customs authorities refusing RS Berkane to play in their official jerseys.

These jerseys, featuring the complete map of Morocco, including its disputed Sahara region, sparked controversy and led to the Algerian authorities withholding them.

Despite the intervention by CAF, the Algerian football authorities insisted on a change, resulting in the scheduled game not being played

In response to the first-leg boycott, RS Berkane was awarded a three-goal advantage by the Confederation of African Football’s Competitions and the Management of the Club Licensing System.

Algerian authorities have indicated their intention to escalate the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, underscoring the seriousness of the situation and the potential legal ramifications.

The Confederation of African football (CAF) is yet to react to this.USM Alger risks ban from all CAF related competition and a heavy fine.
