DR Congo forward Fiston Kalala Mayele scored a brace as Tanzanian champions Young Africans (Yanga) SC dispatched Rivers United FC 2-0 in the first-leg quarter-final clash of the 2022/23 CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday in Uyo.

The Nigerian champions were second-best in their fief as Yanga SC imposed their dominance and scored twice in the second segment to take a giant step in the last four even before the return game next week in Dar Es Salaam.

The Nigerian side paid the price for missing key men Paul Acquah due to injury, Chukwu to suspension and ill Onoja.

The Tanzanian visitors guided by coach Nasreddine Nabi dominated the first-half and came close to scoring through Stephane Aziz Ki whose combination with Mayele created all sorts of trouble for the hosts, but failed to provide the desired goal in the opening 45 minutes.

Rivers had chances of their own but couldn’t capitalize. Skipper Nwagua Nakeberi failed to hit the target with his effort in the far post despite beating the keeper.

Mayele scored the opener of the game after 73 minutes, rewarding the visitors for their efforts in the lunch time kick-off.

Just like for the first, the Congolese forward combined with Mwamnyeto who fed him from a set-piece for Meyele to make it 2-0 nine minutes from time.

There were chances for the hosts in the final moments but no additional goal as Yanga held on to win 2-0.

Malian keeper Djuigi Diarra kept an important clean sheet for the visitors who look to complete the job in Dar Es Salaam except Rivers stage a shocking comeback.
