Brazil Stages Dramatic Comeback to Eliminate Cameroon in U20 FIFA Women’s World Cup

Brazil came from behind to secure a 3-1 victory over Cameroon, sending the Indomitable Lionesses packing in the Round of 16 at the U20 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Lionesses dominated possession in the opening half, creating several scoring opportunities but lacking the clinical finishing needed to convert. The first real chance came in the 11th minute when Naomi Eto delivered a long cross from the right flank, but Camilla Yvette Daha inexplicably fired wide, despite being in close proximity to the Brazilian keeper.

In the 22nd minute, Cameroon seemed to have taken the lead when Ngueleu Nina chest-controlled a throw-in and set up Naomi Eto for a shot. Although her initial attempt was blocked, Eto managed to slot home the rebound. However, the referee ruled out the goal for an alleged handball. Coach Hassan Balla opted to challenge the decision using VAR, and after a review, the goal was awarded, confirming that Ngueleu had made contact with the ball using her chest.

Brazil, now on the back foot, ramped up their intensity and found an equalizer in the 35th minute. A foul by Ngaseh Bernadette on a Brazilian attacker inside the box led to a penalty. The referee initially hesitated but, after consulting VAR, upheld the decision. Priscilla stepped up and confidently converted the penalty, leveling the score at 1-1.

Despite Cameroon’s superior play and numerous chances, they were unable to capitalize. Regular time ended in a stalemate, with both teams heading into prolongation at 1-1.

As the match progressed into extra time, Brazil took control. Just one minute into the first half of extra time, Captain Dudinha found the back of the net, giving Brazil a crucial 2-1 lead. In the dying moments of the match, at 120+3 minutes, Dudinha struck again, sealing the victory at 3-1.

Coach Hassan Balla expressed pride in his team’s performance, stating, “I am satisfied with these girls. It was a worthwhile experience. We will learn and correct our mistakes for the next time, God willing.”

Captain Naomi Eto echoed her coach’s sentiments but voiced frustration over the officiating. “Honestly, both teams played well. For an opponent like Brazil, we were up to the task. We gave our best, but unfortunately, the officiating was our biggest opponent. We wanted more from our first-time participation, but we’ll get it right next time.”

With Cameroon’s exit from the tournament, Nigeria remains the lone African representative, set to face Japan this weekend in the quarterfinals.
