- Botswana edge closer to a second AWCON appearance after a 4-1 win against Gabon
- Gaonyafiwe Ontlametse scored a brace in the contest against Gabon
- All five goals were scored by four players in the second segment
Botswana took a giant step towards qualification for the final round of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AWCON) following an emphatic 4-1 against Gabon in Franceville during the first-leg qualifier game this Friday.
Gaonyafiwe Ontlametse ensured Botswana returned home with a huge advantage, scoring twice in the second segment, adding to goals from Lesego Radiakanyo and Refilwe Tholakele in a game the hosts converted a late penalty through Laschwana to keep the scores at 4-1.
Playing at home in Franceville, the Panthers lady took the game to Botswana and created a number of scaring moments for visiting Botswana.
At the interval, neither Gabon or Botswana had found the breakthrough and so left fans anxious about a second segment that didn’t disappoint.
Lesego pounced on a defensive blunder to put the visitors ahead 11 minutes after resumption.
Her strike partner, Ontlametse got a quickfire brace to make it 3-0 by the 89th minute, as Gabon looked out of steam from then on, but their visitors had not done with the rout.
Refilwe completed scoring for Burkina Faso who hope to keep the 4-0 advantage and win with a clean sheet.
Laschwana squashed hopes of the clean sheet after converting an added time penalty to at least give the home fans something to chair about.
The massive victory takes 2022 quarter-finalist, Botswana closer to the second round tie against Kenya or Cameroon whose meeting on Friday in Douala was sanctioned by a win for the hosts, courtesy of an early goal from Spain-based defender, Eliane Manbolambo.
