Cameroon and Manchester United’s shotstopper, Andre Onana, has been nominated for the Ballon D’or -Yachine Trophy which awards best goalkeeper of the season.

The former Inter Milan keeper has been nominated alongside Morocco and Al Hilal’s Yassine Bounou, Thibaut Courtois of Real Madrid and Belgium, Manchester City and Brazil’s Ederson Santana, Marc Andre Ter Stegen(Germany-Barcelona), Aaron Ramsdale(England-Arsenal) Dominik Livakovic(Croatia-Fernabache), Brice Samba(France-Lens),
Mike Maigan(France-AC Milan), Emiliano Martinez(Argentina-Aston Villa).

Andre,27, finished last season with Inter of Milan as best keeper of the UEFA Champions league after helping the club reach the final of the competition, where they suffered a narrow 0-1 loss to Manchester City.

Having established himself as one of the best keepers in the world today, Andre kept an applaudable record to outsmart the other nominees in this category to emerge best Keeper of the world’s most prestigious inter-club football tournament.

He kept 19 clean sheets in 41 appearances at Inter last season. Compared to some top Premier League goalkeepers, statistics prove that, Onana had a better save percentage than both Liverpool’s Alisson (71.52%) and Manchester City’s Ederson (58.97%).

Reliable at making reflex saves, stopping shots from inside the box, capable of calming down pressure with the ball under his feet is what unarguably makes him outstanding from the other keepers.

Over nine months of his career was halted while at Ajax when he faced a dopping ban but this did not stop him from striving towards greatness but became even more consistent.

After serving the ban, he earned a call to the national team for the 2021 AFCON on home soil where he led Cameroon finish third in the competition.

This is the first time in his career he gets this huge recognition in this prestigious and most recognized award in the world. For the first time, he competes with big names and equally Courtois who grabbed the award in this category last year.

The Manchester United Keeper who just officially came out of retirement after he did in December last year, is undoubtedly a definition of the phrase “Hardwork pays”.

Presently, he is in the Lions Den preparing to help Cameroon grab a ticket to Code D’Ivoire for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON next year.

Onana and teammates take on Burundi next Tuesday, September 12, at the Roumde Adjia stadium in Garoua for this crucial encounter.
