  • Just Chelsea’s third win of the season and that dire goalless run is finally over

Potential indomitable Lions of Cameroon midfielder Carlos Noom Quomah Baleba made his first start and lasted 63 minutes in the heart of the Brighton and Hove Albion midfield on Wednesday as they suffered a 0-1 defeat against Chelsea in the fourth round of the 2023/24 Carabao Cup.

The 19-year-old midfield import from French football was one of the attractions of the night at the Stamford Bridge as coach Di Zerbi opted to throw him in from the start, following his impressive cameo again Bournemouth last weekend.

Once again, the box-to-box midfielder manifested his know-how across the opening hour of the game, winning most of the duels and ensuring he provides the necessary defensive supplements and attacking flair that the team needed from the middle of the pack to maximize their chances of getting a win.

However, Chelsea earned a much-needed and morale-boosting win courtesy of an early second segment goal.

Nicolas Jackson netted the only goal of the game shortly after half-time to answer his own critics and ease the early pressure on manager Mauricio Pochettino after a torrid start to life in the Stamford Bridge dugout.

Billy Gilmour replaced Baleba in the 63rd minute as the Seagulls pushed to get the equalizer that wasn’t to be.

Senegalese forward Nicolas Jackson saw a second goal ruled out for offside after linking up brilliantly with Chelsea’s full debutant Cole Palmer, but the hosts still clung on to defeat Roberto De Zerbi’s high-flying Seagulls and seal a spot in round four, where they will be heavy favourites to progress again past Championship outfit Blackburn Rovers.
