AS Fortuna took a giant step towards avoiding relegation from the MTN Elite One championship on Tuesday by beating struggling Avion Academy of Douala by the odd goal in five in a compelling thriller at the Omnisport Annex stadium in Yaoundé.
Aime Boris Mbongo won the see-saw contest for AS Fortuna after brace from lead score Adrien Boris Mfoumou was cancelled by second half goals from Jules Meyo and Stéphane Meng.
Not only did Mfoumou throw himself back into the golden boot race, he also helped Fortuna move up to the second position in the relegation playoffs with 12 points while Avion Academy remained bottom with five points from a possible 21.
The game got off to the best possible start for Fortuna playing who were in familiar territory in Yaoundé. The center region outfit scored the opener with just four minutes on the clock. Mfoumou took advantage of a defensive blunder to fire home the opener.
Meyo got a deserved equalizer for Avion Academy just before the pause but Mfoumou restored the advantage, and completed his brace in the 57th minute.
Meng equalized with two minutes of being behind again, but Mbongo won the game when he made it 3-2 in favor of the black and reds with a chunk of time left on the clock.
Though there were chances in the closing stages of the game, there wasn’t another goal as Fortuna held on to extend their unbeaten run in the playoffs to six games.
The 12 points accumulated by Yuh Moses and co till now puts them in a relatively comfortable position going into the final four games of the playoffs.
14-goal forward, Mfoumou is actually leading the charge towards the survival of Roger Noah’s Fortuna that entered the big time in 2018.
