Atezambong Carine Fomo will make her debut in the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) this Tuesday when she features as first assistant Referee in the Congo Vs Somalia game.
The FIFA certified Referee has been appointed first Assistant to Togo’s Vincentia Enyonam in the game Fanta Idrissa Kone and Merveil Melvin Melvin from Central Africa Republic has been made second assistant and fourth official respectively.
Carine and Bito Jeannot are two of Cameroon’s Referees at the tournament Ngwa Blaise Yuven was part of in the last edition in 2019.
Carine considered one of the legends of officiating on the continent has returned to Algeria for a ninth major tournament a glittering career that has seen her feature at least three men’s tournaments.
The U-17 AFCON and the U23 competitions were the only tournaments on the continent she had not officiated in going into this year.
When lady Enyonam’s kick-off whistle goes Carine will become the first woman to participate at the AFCON, the CHAN and the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.
The latest feat awaiting Carine simply highlights how far she has come in an area the previous generation use to say belongs to the men.
