Cameroon and Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has sparked widespread debate on social media after posting a cryptic message on Snapchat suggesting that controversial Cameroonian figure Koagne Donatien may not, in fact, be dead.
“Apparently Koagne Donatien is not d€ad,” Onana wrote, without further explanation.
The brief message was enough to reignite long-standing discussions around one of the most enigmatic and divisive personalities in Cameroon’s modern economic history, prompting confusion, speculation and renewed interest across Cameroonian social media platforms.
A name etched in controversy
Koagne Donatien, popularly known as “the billionaire of Bandjoun”, rose to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s, presenting himself as a self-made businessman from Cameroon’s West Region. Through ventures in transport, real estate and import-export, he cultivated the image of a rags-to-riches success story, becoming a symbol of wealth and ambition for many at the time.
However, his fortune later became clouded by allegations of fraud and deceptive investment schemes, with critics describing his operations as resembling a financial pyramid or Ponzi-style system. As pressure mounted from creditors and judicial authorities, Koagne Donatien left Cameroon.
He was widely reported to have died abroad in 2002, away from the public eye and far removed from the flamboyant lifestyle that once defined him.
Despite this, his name has endured in the national consciousness, often cited as a cautionary tale of unchecked ambition and financial deception. For many Cameroonians, Koagne Donatien remains synonymous with one of the country’s most infamous economic scandals.
What could Onana be implying?
Andre Onana’s statement offers no detail or evidence, and there is no official or credible confirmation contradicting the long-held reports of Koagne Donatien’s death. Observers suggest the goalkeeper may have been reacting to resurfaced rumours, conspiracy theories or viral content circulating online that question the official narrative.
Others believe the comment may have been symbolic rather than literal — a reference to the idea that Koagne Donatien’s legacy, methods or influence continue to “live on” in modern Cameroon through similar financial schemes and scandals.
So far, Onana has not clarified his remark, and neither Cameroonian authorities nor family sources have issued any response.
A reminder of unfinished conversations
While the truth behind the post remains unclear, the reaction to it highlights how deeply Koagne Donatien’s story remains embedded in Cameroon’s collective memory. More than two decades after his reported death, his name still provokes debate about wealth, accountability and trust.
For now, Andre Onana’s words remain just that — words — but they have succeeded in reopening a chapter many believed had long been closed.
