The Algerian National football team Nicknamed “The Fennecs”, have secured qualification for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), scheduled for Ivory Coast.

This follows their 1-0 win over Niger on Monday evening at the Olympic Stadium in Rades, Tunisia, home to Niger.

31-year-old Al Saad’s forward Baghdad Bounedja, scored the lone goal of the game at the sixth minute, to hand Djamel Belmadi’s side their fourth win in Group F of the qualifiers.

Algeria defeated Niger 1-0 on Monday to secure top spot in Group K

The Fennecs have won all their four outings this far, with back-to-back wins over Niger in less than five days, adding to previous victories over other Group F members, Tanzania and Uganda, which takes them top of the Group with 12 points.

With two more games to go, Eight points currently separates Algeria from second placed Tanzania, which means Algeria is more than certain to finish top of the Group, no matter the outcome of their remaining games against Tanzania and Uganda.

Tanzania with four points, and Niger with two points, will have to battle it out for the remaining spot in Group F.

Algeria joins Morocco and Ivory Coast as sure candidates for AFCON 2023

Algeria therefore becomes the second Nation to join host Ivory Coast to secure qualification for the Pan-African Football Jamboree, scheduled for Ivory Coast between January – February 2024.

Last week, the Atlas Lions of Morocco secured their qualification from Group K, where they currently have six points, five points more than both South Africa and Liberia. Group K is made up of just three teams, after the other Group member Zimbabwe, were hit with sanctions and barred from participating.
