African champions seal qualification for WAFCON 2024

Two goals in the second half were enough to seal the South African senior women’s national team’s berth at the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) against Burkina Faso.

The first leg of the final round of the qualifiers ended 1-1 in Ouagadougou.

A foul on Lebohang Ramalepe led to a penalty awarded to Desiree Elli’s side.

Linda Motlhalo colly converter the resulting spot kick in the 56th minute.

An excellent finish by Nicole Michael in the 86th minute earned South Africa a 2-0 victory.

South African goalkeeper, Kailyn Swart made a crucial save in the 81st minute to keep her team in the game.

At the end of the game, South Africa picked a 3-1 win on aggregate which sealed a place at next year’s WAFCON.

They joined the host, Morocco to qualify for the tournament.

South Africa beat Morocco 2-1 to win the 2022 WAFCON, their first African title.
