Nigeria’s senior national team suffered its first defeat at the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) Qualifiers with a 1-0 loss to Guinea Bissau in Abuja.

Nigeria started the game with Francis Uzoho, Calvin Bassey, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Kevin Akpoguma, Zaidu Sanusi, Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Alex Iwobi, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, and Victor Osimhen.

For Guinea Bissau, Jonas Asvedo Mendes, Fali Cande, Braima Cande Nogueira Jorge, Alfa Semedo Esteves, Jefferson Anilson Silva Encada, Moreto Moro Cassama, Mama Samba Balde, Piquetti Djassi Brito E Silva, Eucidalcio Homes, Mane Manconi Soriano, and Opa Sangante started the game.

Samba Balde scored the first goal of the match from a counter which left him one-on-one with Uzoho before slotting the ball in between the goalkeeper’s leg into the back of the net in the 30th minute.

Jose Peseiro in the second half introduced Paul Onuachu, Simon Moses, and Frank Onyeka in a bid to change the tide of the game but the visitors hold on for a precious win.

Semi Ajayi replaced Akpoguma who had a head injury.

The win put the Djurtus top of the group with seven points ahead of Nigeria (6 points).

Sierra Leone has two points while Sao Tome and Principe have a point.

Guinea Bissau will next host Nigeria on March 27, at the Estadio 24 de Septembro, Bissau.
