The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has fined Algeria $100,000 following disciplinary breaches after their Africa Cup of Nations match against Nigeria.
CAF also imposed individual sanctions on two Algerian players. Goalkeeper Luca Zidane has been suspended for two matches, while defender Rafik Belghali has received a four-match ban for confronting referee Issa Sy after the final whistle.
The punishments stem from incidents that occurred at the end of a tense and closely contested game. CAF said there were protests from Algerian players and officials over refereeing decisions, with tensions escalating as match officials were leaving the pitch.
In a statement, CAF’s disciplinary committee said Algeria’s conduct violated the organisation’s disciplinary and ethical regulations. It did not clarify whether the financial penalty relates solely to the actions of players or also includes the behaviour of team officials.
The Algerian Football Federation has yet to comment on the ruling. The suspensions take immediate effect, meaning Zidane and Belghali will miss upcoming competitions under CAF jurisdiction.
