Two-time Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON winner and Cameroon legend Patrick Mboma has revealed the opponents he hopes Cameroon will face during the group stages of the upcoming 2025 TotalEnergies AFCON in Morocco.

The former African player of the year in 2000, shared his prediction with CAF ahead of the competition’s draw at the Mohammed V National Theatre in Rabat, Morocco tonight. Mboma’s dream lineup for the Indomitable Lions consists of, Côte d’Ivoire, Mozambique and Angola.

Each of the teams on Patrick Mboma presents a unique challenge and opportunity for the Indomitable Lions, making them ideal group-stage opponents. Interestingly, Mboma paired Cameroon with the Palancas Negras, a team that the four-time AFCON winners faced in the ongoing qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the U.S.A., Canada and Mexico.

With Cameroon’s rich history in the AFCON, including five championship titles, expectations are high as the team prepares for the continental showdown. The Indomitable Lions are eager to bounce back after their round of 16 exit in the 2023 AFCON against the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

With the draw edging ever-so closer, fans will wait to see how the group stage draw unfolds and whether Mboma’s dream opponents align with reality. 24 qualified teams will take part in the draw, divided into six groups of four, with the top two in each group, along with the four best third-placed teams, advancing to the round of 16.

Cameroon is in Pot 2 alongside Mali, Tunisia, South Africa and Burkina Faso, while host Morocco and defending champions Côte d’Ivoire are also in Pot 1. The full pots include:

Pot 1: Morocco (hosts), Senegal, Egypt, Algeria, Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire (defending champions)

Pot 2: Cameroon, Mali, Tunisia, South Africa, DR Congo, Burkina Faso

Pot 3: Gabon, Angola, Zambia, Uganda, Equatorial Guinea, Benin

Pot 4: Mozambique, Comoros, Tanzania, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Botswana
The 2025 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON will run from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026.
