AFCON 2023: Ronwen Williams wins Ecobank goalkeeper of the tournament

The 22-year-old made six penalty saves, four at the quarter-final against Cape Verde and two at the third-place match against DR Congo to emerge the best keeper of the 2023 Africa cup of nations.

The former SuperSport United player made world soccer history by becoming the first goalkeeper to save four out of five penalties in a major international tournament.

Williams saved spot-kicks from Bebe, Willy Semedo, Laros Duarte, and Patrick Andrade, securing South Africa’s 2-1 victory in the penalty shootout after a goalless draw in regular time.

His heroics teleported Bafana Bafana to the semi finals where they unfortunately lost to Nigeria on penalties. However Williams exceptional shot-stopping abilities aired South Africa clinch bronze.

Ronwen has made the most saves in the 2023 Africa cup of nations , keeping the highest clean sheet ,five, one more than close contender Nwabali of Nigeria.

In the seven games played, Ronwen Williams has conceded only three goals. One of these goals came from a penalty spot in the semi-final loss to Nigeria.

He surpassed former Bafana goalkeeper Andre Arendse’s record by keeping five clean sheets in a single major tournament.

His performance has been outstanding. The shot stopper face over 22 shots, making an impressive 20 saves, resulting in a remarkable 90.9% save percentage.

The golden boot winner made his Bafana Bafana debut in March 2014 during an international friendly match against Brazil. His inclusion came after the first-choice goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune, suffered a sprained ankle injury just before the game.

In August 2021, Williams was bestowed with the honor of leading the national team.
He took over the captain’s armband from Thulani Hlatshwayo, assuming a pivotal role in guiding the team.

With 43 appearances for Bafana Bafana so far, Williams has been a consistent presence between the posts. His eyes are set on a significant milestone, reaching 50 caps for the South African men’s national team.
