Nigeria goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali is on cloud nine after winning the man of the match award.
The Chippa United goalkeeper was voted the man of the match after Nigeria’s 4-2 victory on penalties over South Africa in Bouake on Monday.
He put up fantastic saves and stopped two penalties during the shootouts which were decisive in lifting the team to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
“I really appreciate the management and the coaches today,” He said after the match.
“They guided me a lot throughout this tournament. Today, I feel so happy and really appreciate my teammates.
“To me, there is room to think about criticism because it happens in football. When the results don’t go well, your fans want more for you but I don’t see it as anything but a motivation to me to keep working.
“When the coach informed me that he was coming to South Africa and to visit me was a motivation. For a coach of one of the biggest teams on the continent to visit was a source of motivation.” He concluded.
With four clean sheets alongside South African goalie, Ronwen Williams, he is in pole position to win the goalkeeper of the tournament depending on the result of the final match.
He has the record as the first and only Nigerian goalkeeper to keep four straight clean sheets at a major football tournament.
