AFC7 has taken a decisive step in expanding the visibility of Football 7 on the continent by appointing former Cameroon international Jean II Makoun as its new ambassador. The decision brings on board one of the country’s most technically gifted midfielders of his generation — a perfect match for a discipline built on skill, intelligence and quick execution.

Makoun carved out an illustrious career spanning almost two decades, featuring for top clubs such as Lille, Olympique Lyonnais, Aston Villa, and Olympiacos, while earning over 60 caps for the Indomitable Lions. Known for his exceptional ball mastery, vision, positional sharpness and his ability to control tempo under pressure, he stood out as one of Cameroon’s most refined midfielders. Those attributes mirror the essence of Football 7, where agility, close control and rapid transitions are fundamental.

AFC7 President Bamnga Jacques expressed confidence that Makoun’s pedigree and understanding of the African football landscape would be instrumental in driving the sport forward:

“We welcome Mr. Makoun and are confident in his ability to drive the growth of Football 7 across the continent.”

Makoun’s first assignment as ambassador will take him to Morocco this week, where he is expected to feature in a high-profile seven-aside exhibition match designed to showcase the discipline’s dynamism and growing appeal.

Football 7 — or seven-aside — is a condensed, high-tempo version of the game, played on smaller pitches with shorter halves. The format highlights technique, creativity in tight spaces, fast decision-making and fluid attacking sequences. Its accessibility and entertainment value have helped it gain momentum globally, and AFC7 is positioning Africa to be part of that evolution.

With Makoun on board, AFC7 aims to strengthen its development programmes, increase community engagement and create competitive platforms that will elevate Football 7 across the continent.
