Adama Bojang scored a hat-trick this Friday evening as the young Scorpions of The Gambia mauled South Sudan 5-0 to reach the semi-final of the 2023 U20 Africa Cup of Nations(AFCON) and qualify for the World Cup later this year in Indonesia.
South Sudan had enjoyed a wonderful ride through out the competition but against the Scorpions El Hodoud Stadium it proved to be a mountain to climb.
It was a quickfire start for The Gambia who scored just six minutes into the contest through hat-trick hero Adama who benefitted from a Alagie Saine assist to beat Godwill Yogusuk on goal for South Sudan.
Matters were made worst for the Sudanese when key midfielder Mabior Achiek signaled he couldn’t continue after picking up a muscle problem. He was replaced by Sofino Lado after just minutes.
Adama of Real of Banjoul needed to be more tactful to score the second few minutes later but his efforts to round the keeper wasn’t well calculated allowing room for the netminder to get the ball.
Abishai had Sudan’s best chance of the afternoon and could have made it 1-1 in the 27th minutes before he did the more complicated by beating the defence and someone put the ball wide from an unmissable range.
A well cooked corner just a minute later from Salifu Colley put it on the plate for defender Moses Jarju to score the second.
South Africa based Kajally Drammeh of Cape Town found Adama in the box just and he completed his brace 13 minutes before the interval to make it 3-0.
The Gambians didn’t slow down after the interval; the compounded the woes of the debutants two minutes upon resumption as Mahmadu Bajo laid the ball on the plate for Adama to score the second hat-trick of the tournament.
Mahmud Bajo sealed the victory with a fifth goal scored after they had made a number of changes with Nigeria in mind.
It was a commanding display for the Gambia as it finished 5-0 on the day they extended their run to four wins in four without conceding.
The Gambia fold their sleeves to confront record champions Nigeria in the semi-final knowing both nations are world cup bound as well as neighbors Senegal who face the winners in the second quarter-final game this Friday.
South Sudan go home as a proud nation though it didn’t happen for them in the quarter-final while The Gambia and their lead man Adama match on targeting the title and the Golden Boot.
